I have a small anvil and a chasing hammer with a fairly large surface area. I want to flatten the front part of an earring wire but my trials so far have resulted in marks on the edge of the flattened area. Any hints on technique to get a cleaner result?

Have you tried covering both sides of the metal with a piece of cloth first, then hammered it. This should keep you from making any tool marks on the metal.

Thank you both for the help! I'm going to try both using nylon tipped pliers and a cloth, and see which one works best.

Your hammer is not curved. If you get yourself a small hammer with a curved face you will do just fine.
